VANDEWEYER / ILLVIBE / DRAKE FEAT. REAL GEIZT / SPLIDTTERCRIST

VANDEWEYER / ILLVIBE / DRAKE FEAT. REAL GEIZT / SPLIDTTERCRIST

Marimba, vibraphone, metal plates, drums, record players, and voice boxes – all turned inside out. These are the weapons of choice when the Belgian vibraphonist Els Vandeweyer, American drummer Hamid Drake, turntablist DJ Illvibe and rap masters Real Geizt / Splidttercrist // Imitierte Signale from Berlin take the stage in a creative showdown.

The Berlin segment of the band met on a Real Geizt project at last spring's Wiener Festspiele; at A L'ARME, they team up with the legendary Hamid Drake for the first time ever. Vandeweyer takes the lead, with improvisation and stagecraft playing a central role. This summit of improvisational artists and rap mavericks will start from "intersections of oceanic protuberances” (Real Geizt) and venture into territory yet unexplored.

At radialsystem Berlin on the 1st August!

Els Vandeweyer (DE/BE) — marimba, vibraphone, percussion
DJ Illvibe (DE) — turntables
Hamid Drake (US) — drums
Real Geizt (DE) — vocals

A MUSICAL STORYTELLER: MATANA ROBERTS

A MUSICAL STORYTELLER: MATANA ROBERTS

Matana Roberts is a saxophonist, composer, a sound and concept artist, and is obsessed with the way the past influences our present. She sees her work in all of these areas both as field research and political intervention. In 2016, Roberts recorded a series of saxophone performances in subway stations, giving them titles that highlight the struggle between Native Americans and their colonizers – a struggle that continues on to this day. Roberts’ monumental “Coin Coin” project, which is currently comprised of three chapters, burrows through the layers of history, uncovers the continuity of repression and grievances, and assembles sound collages in trouble spots to create scenarios that can be as threatening as they are liberating. There is no doubt: Matana Roberts is one of the most important voices of her generation.

GIOVANNI LAMI > Attraction. Repulsion. Reversion.

GIOVANNI LAMI > Attraction. Repulsion. Reversion.

Giovanni Lami immerses himself in the phenomenon of magnetism with unrestrained curiosity and regularly wrestles surprising insights out of it. Lami comes from Ravenna, Italy, and in our current era of hyperspecialization, he can truly be called a universal scholar. His qualifications range from photography and visual arts to a PhD in food technology all the way to a wide range of professional experience, including as a UNESCO employee in Ethiopia. All this has sharpened his analytical view, which he has focussed for some time now on the potential of sound. In his performances, he manipulates in real time the sounds that are buried within the metal oxide layers of magnetic tape a million times over and can be teased out time and time again.

IRREVERSIBLE ENTANGLEMENTS

IRREVERSIBLE ENTANGLEMENTS

IRREVERSIBLE ENTANGLEMENTS
Heads up! Ticket pre-sales & full programme to be published next Thursday 16th May!

In the meanwhile, let us introduce you to the American free music collective IRREVERSIBLE ENTANGLEMENTS >>>

Poet and performer Camae Ayewa, better known under her alias Moor Mother, originally teamed up with saxophonist Keir Neuringer and bassist Luke Stewart to take a stand against police brutality after the death of Akai Gurley in New York in 2014: powerful fire music spoken word cascades process the trauma and struggle for survival that African Americans endure in the US. Later joined by Aquiles Navarro on the trumpet and Tcheser Holmes on the drums, the ensemble has not lost one bit of its rage or urgency in the slightest. Quite the opposite, in fact. Irreversible Entanglements makes the promise of jazz as a passionate appeal and the soundtrack of liberation a reality. We are extraordinarily honored to welcome the collective from Philadelphia, New York and Washington D.C. on the 3rd August at radialsystem Berlin!

SUPER JAZZ SANDWICH: A NINE-STEP MODEL

SUPER JAZZ SANDWICH: A NINE-STEP MODEL

Let’s start the new week with our first Radialsystem announcement for the 1st August >> Hailing from Essen, Germany respectively Italy, saxophonist Florian Walter, drummer Simon Camatta and trumpeter Flavio Zanuttini have been making music together from the moment they met each other for the first time in 2010.

As SUPER JAZZ SANDWICH they are mostly concerned with the question of how to combine strategies of free improvised music with more traditional varieties of jazz, without having to compromise on aesthetics. For their new program, they have dealt with the esoteric concept of the Enneagram, a nine-step model of personality description and development.

Get ready for a performative journey ranging from structured improvisation over game pieces to complex compositions that are highly entertaining for both the ears and the eyes. Let’s get tested!

1 August 2019, Radialsystem

THE GRADUAL PROGRESSIONS OF GREG FOX

THE GRADUAL PROGRESSIONS OF GREG FOX

More than a drum solo >> the Seventh edition of A L'ARME! will be introduced by NYC-based interdisciplinary artist and drum virtuoso Greg Fox presenting his electro-acoustic Solo magic at the Holzmarkt/Säälchen, 31st July!

On his latest album »The Gradual Progression« (RVNG Intl.), Fox uses tonal palettes, or virtual instruments invented for each piece, in an intuitive and expressive way through Sensory Percussion’s hardware/software system that overlays sensors onto acoustic drums. His Solo work is concerned with finding and creating gestural points of procedural interaction that reconcile seemingly unrelated interstitial spaces, using sound to create and describe emotional and geometric architectural territories. Using the drums as a main interface of communication, in tandem with Sensory Percussion, Fox describes, animates and accesses hidden synesthetic landscapes. Therefore he also works with stunning beautiful instrumental samples, pre-recorded by outstanding colleagues such as acoustic guitarist Michael Beharie or tenor saxophonist Maria Grand.
Welcome Mr. Fox to A L'ARME! Festival Vol.VII

GURLS >> RUN BOY, RUN!

Congratulations to Hanna, Ellen and Rohey who just received the Norwegian Grammy award Spellemannprisen!

We are excited to announce that GURLS will join our opening night at the Holzmarkt/Säälchen on the 31st July! Describing their sound as Vocal Jazz is an understatement. GURLS is a Norwegian power trio comprised of the stellar Rohey Taalah on vocals, bass player Ellen Andrea Wang and Hanna Paulsberg on tenor saxophone who are not afraid of being straightforward when they present their self-ironic songs on topics such as background singers, pork chop lovers, good-looking boy yodellers, or being single. Here three of Norway’s busiest musicians get together in what they themselves have called a musical breather, and the result will make you want to laugh, sway your hips and maybe even blush a bit. GURLS - singing about boys and girls.

»Run Boy, Run« truly is a masterpiece. Get your copy on the 31st July at A L'ARME! Festival Vol.VII

Hanna Paulsberg (NO) — tenor saxophone, vocals
Rohey Taalah (NO) — vocals
Ellen Andrea Wang (NO) — double-bass, vocals
